Issue: Download/Install never completes.

Solution:

This is a known issue with the SmartThings app and/or servers. Usually the problem goes away after waiting a while, therefore you might want to wait and install another time. However, here’s what you can do to speed things up.

Option 1: Block UDP from your router

As confirmed by one SmartThings Support one of the older firmware versions has a security certificate issue. To bypass this, you need to prevent the hub to update its time from NTP server.

  • Disable NTP service (UDP Port 123) from router
    • Check your router's setting
    • On WRT routers "iptables -I FORWARD -p udp  --dport 123 -j DROP" command may be required.
  • Reset and retry installation
  • If you see the greenlight come up at 99% of installation but still get stuck, you're update was successful, you can exit the SmartThings app (or reboot phone) and open again.

Option 2: First use network cable to let Hub download firmware before setup

  • Plug the network cable to the hub. Make sure the network cable is plugged to your modem and you have internet connection.
  • Wait 10 minutes ON before starting the setup on green/red light.
  • Start setup, choose network or Wifi as desired.

Option 3: Let install get stuck and restart Hub

  • On Wifi or ethernet cable, start the installation as usual, wait until it reaches download or installation screen and it is stuck. Wait at least 15 minutes with no progress bar movement before proceeding.
  • Reboot your phone. (or crash/exit the SmartThings app)
  • Do not start the SmartThings app yet
  • Unplug the hub, wait 10 seconds and re-plug it. You should see the following lights on the hub. Red, Blue blink, Blue Blink faster, Yellow blink, Yellow. Purple. Green.
  • If you’re seeing Green, the operation worked successfully. Just wait until you reach the green for 5 minutes. You may see purple light in between, this is normal. Purple light means the hub is updating.
    • If you end up with Red/Green light again, you can restart the installation and try the setups above once more or wait a few hours until the issue clears.
  • Once Green light is observed for longer than 5 minutes, start the app.
  • Go to the “Devices” section in the app, you should see the Hub appear.

Issue: Hub does not give me the red/green lights to indicate ready for setup after a reset.

Solution: Follow the setup instructions in the app. Select the ethernet/wired option to install. Wait at least 5 minutes to let the light go solid blue. Tap “Next” anyway even if the light is not red/green when the app prompts. Installation should proceed normally. If you get an error, reset the hub and try again.

Issue: Some of my older Zigbee devices are not working with the hub.

Solution:

Try resetting your device first before trying to add to your hub. The issue may be with Hub’s choice of Zigbee radio channel not being supported by the older device.  In order to change the Zigbee radio channel of the hub, follow the instructions below:

Login to: https://my.smartthings.com/advanced/

  1. Click on "Hubs" on the left menu
  2. Click on your newly setup Smart Home Hub, the default name of it would be "Hub" if you didn't change the name after setup.
  3. Click on Zigbee on the right or scroll down.
  4. See Channel dropdown
  5. Select one of these channels: 14, 15, 19, 20, or 24. We recommend Channel 24.
  6. Click confirm
  7. Wait 1-2 minutes as it will take some time for the channel to change.
  8. Click on "Hubs" and select your hub if you have to.
  9. Look under the "Zigbee" row, where you can verify which Zigbee channel is being used.
  10. Reboot your Hub by unplugging and plugging again.
  11. Reset your Zigbee device (depends on device, usually if there is a button, you may need to hold it)
  12. Wait for the greenlight on the hub and try again.

Issue: I tried everything, it doesn't work

Solution: In some cases Smartthings servers go under maintenance or might have issues. Please check their status page here: https://status.smartthings.com/.
